After decades into his political career and a near four-year run as the 46th president, President Biden announced that he will not continue in the 2024 presidential race, Sunday morning.
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President,” Biden said. “And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best intent of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”
The news comes after the increased pressure of Democrats encouraging Biden to end his bid for reelection, and just days after former President Trump first spoke since his attempted assassination at the Republican National Convention.
Minutes after releasing his statement, Biden added that he will fully support and endorse Vice President Kamala Harris to be the party’s nominee for the November election.
In her own statement, Harris said she is honored for the endorsement.
“I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party–and unite the Nation–to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda,” Harris said.
If nominated, Harris will make history as the first Black and South Asian woman to be a nominee and potential president.
Biden said he will address the nation in more detail about his decision later this week.
